New Year, NEW-Trition ; TIP #2

Maybe we should put an asterisk beside this Tip as it is absolutely crucial. We discussed why most people fail on their diets and workouts so quickly, but lets go back to that briefly. Why do you think you failed last time? Lack of will? Lack of knowledge? No one to support you? Was it that you just found it too hard to diet? I feel that often times, it is a combination of all these things. I want you to really look back and realize why you failed your last program or diet plan. Be honest with yourself. Fitness, like many other worthwhile things in life, is cruel. You will only get out what you put in.

Nutrition

This is the fundamentals behind you diet plan as a whole. This is the cornerstone to your overall health and quality of life. Most of us abuse our bodies on a daily basis with poor eating habits. I think this is where the lack of knowledge comes in to play. If you only knew how that great tasting cheeseburger raises you cholesterol and increases your chances of heart disease, maybe you would pick a healthier alternative. In human nutrition, the three macronutrients are PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATES, and FAT. Each have a specific function. I do not to confuse you with information overload so we won't go into that end of the discussion. Just know that you should keep all three of these in check. They play a role in energy levels, blood glucose levels, cholesterol, and so much more.

1. Specific. Your diet plan should be specific for you. Some diet plans ask you to count calories, cut carbs, or eat a lot of protein. These are great in some aspects, but what works for your friend may not work for you. Example. Counting calories is too broad of plan for a female vegetarian who is trying to lose 20 pounds compared to a female who eats regularly with the same goal of weight loss. The vegetarian would most like consume most of her calories through carbohydrates and find it difficult to balance protein in the equation. Counting calories is a great start but should be modified to be more specific when you are ready to take the next step in your program.

2. Fit Your Lifestyle. A common reason for falling short on a diet isn't that its impossible. The main reason is that is doesn't fit your lifestyle. Your nutrition has to keep up with you and support your activity levels. No matter if you are extremely active or extremely sedentary, it is crucial that your nutrition supports your levels and inspires you to be more active and keep moving forward!

3. Setting Calorie Limits. This can be tricky but lucky for all of us there are many applications and websites that can aid all fitness levels in setting calorie limits. These are based on age, activity level, weight, height, and goals. The most popular app that my clients use is "MyFitnessPal". It has a full range of options with an extensive database for food logging and many awesome healthy recipes. Again, this is to get you started. The further we go, the more specific we can be with our nutrition by breaking down macro-nutrients to reach desired results!

4. No such thing as bad food. Do not label food as good and bad. 80-90% of eating disorders come from "dieting". It important to understand why cake won't help you toward you fitness goals rather than just labeling it off and never looking at it again. Its not the cake, its the fact that is laden with sugar which are empty calories and have no nutritional value. It may sound silly, but all to often does the cake turn into a cracker.

5. You Have To EAT! Sadly, disordered eating is the norm in our world today. This not only creates many nutrient deficiencies, but also breaks down muscle as energy. This is counter productive for your fitness goals. The more muscle your body has the higher your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the faster your body can burn the unwanted pounds and stay lean. You have to eat to support an active day to day life style otherwise, the hard work you put into exercising will not bring the results you had hoped for. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO EAT.

Nutrition is the cornerstone and building block to your entire fitness journey. The more true knowledge you can gain in the area the better. Do not read phony articles and pull out all the half truths. Do some research into the three macronutrients and how each effect your body on a daily basis. If you can learn how to eat and properly manage your weight, the rest becomes much easier. Nutrition is often either overlooked or under-emphasized in most exercise programs. Do not waste your time and energy on these. NUTRITION and PROPER EATING is 90% of the WAR!
