New Year, New GOALS
Goal setting is extremely important for everything that you do, especially when it comes to fitness. A long term goal with no immediate result needs the be properly planned in order to ultimately accomplish the desired outcome. If you truly want to make this work in your life, take time to set your goals so you can plan to achieve them. A wise man once said; "A dream without a plan is a wish." Here are some tips to help you with setting your goals!
There is an acronym to remember... S.M.A.R.T.
S. Specific.
Your goals should be very specific on what it is that you want to achieve. It is okay to have multiple goals, but make sure each one of these are specific on desired outcome and each goal answers the six "w" questions.
"Who" - Who is involved
"What" - What do you want to accomplish?
"Where" - Location(s) where you will put in work!
"When" - Nail down a time frame that you will stick too.
"Which" - Acknowledge the requirements and constraints of your goal
"Why" - This is the most important. Why is your goal important to you?
Example- General/Broad goal would be: "I am going to get in shape". A specific goal would be: "I am going to get in shape in lose weight by getting a fitness membership and going 3 times per week. I also plan to eat healthier by measuring my food intake and counting calories on a daily basis using a fitness app,"
M. Measurable.
You should be able to track and scale your progress. You will want to establish solid criteria to measure for the attainment of each and every goal you set. By measuring progress, you will stay on track or get back on if you fell off. You will be able to see problems in your plan and fix them immediately. By measuring, you see actual progress before your eyes. This keeps you excited and motivated to reach for the next goal. To determine if your goal is measurable, you should ask yourself...
How muchor how many?
How will I know when I have accomplished my goal?
A. Attainable.
You will find that all goals are attainable if they truly matter to you. You will figure out ways to make that goal happen. You will develop new habits, attitudes, and overall motivation to make you goals come to pass.
You will attain any goal you set if you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame. There are no short cuts. You will have to work your butt off. It will be the most worth while thing you can do. The specific goal here isn't near as important as you learning what it takes to expand and grow to reach for more. You will go outside of your comfort zone in your journey but it will empower you to become more. When you list your goals, you build a new self-image. You start to see yourself in a new light. You develop the habits and traits to attain these goals because you will feel worthy of them. This is the ultimate reason we set goals.
R. Realistic.
This is a broad term. I am all for being "unrealistic" with expectations because it drives you to reach and expand. The term here in relation to goal setting is: A realistic goal is an objective that you are both WILLING and ABLE to work towards. You can reach however as you want with your goals and in my opinion, there is no "too high". Only you can decide that. Think and dream big but make sure your goal represents GREAT progress. The higher the goal the higher the motivation and effort you will put into it to make it a reality!
T. Timely.
A goal should have an established and concrete time frame. You will want to be specific here as this adds to the overall success of attaining your goals. If you state a general timeline of 2 years when you know you can make it happen in 6 months, you aren't being true to your goal and you should reevaluate your "why". Set a date and stick to it. Scale your goal along the way to make sure you are staying on track. Take measurements, access your mental game with motivation and discipline, and stay strict on the date you want to have your goal accomplished. When you make this happen, you show yourself that you can accomplish anything you truly want and will move to the next goal!
Remember, this year can be different. Change your approach that hasn't been working. Set SMART goals and attain them. Make your goals tangible meaning that it appeals to at least one of the senses (touch, taste, sight, smell, sound). You will grow and reach for more as you surpass one goal at a time. You owe it to yourself to plan your goals and remain disciplined. Jim Rohn once said, "Discipline is the bridge between goals and results". Stay committed and make this year the best year!
