NEW YEAR, NEW... MINDSET

Getting Started

The New Year is here and with it comes many new fads, "methods", and ideology. Don't get lost in all the here-say and nonsense. There are no quick fixes or fat burning pills you can take that alone will make you shred away the pounds. There are normally two times a year where the fitness world goes absolutely nuts. These two times are January 1st and right before "beach season". You are better than that. You didn't embark on your journey for better health for a mere couple of weeks. The harsh truth of the matter is that Fitness Memberships are an 80 billion dollar industry. 80% of these customers will quit by February 1st. This is a scary statistic. However, you can be optimistic and know that if you make it past the first crazy month with consistency and discipline, you will actually be a part of the small percentage of individuals who continue.

Mindset

This may sound cliche but it is the absolute most important thing you should consider before starting your fitness journey. Contrary to many ads and fads in our world today, there are no quick fixes. You didn't get where you are today overnight. It has been a progressive thing. Understand your fitness journey will be like this as well. You will see results early and often and this will push you to work harder. There will be times when saying no to drinks and food may seem impossible, but in these moments, you will see how strong and truly committed you are to achieving the goals that matter most to you. Don't give in because every time you can overcome a small temptation, you become a little stronger. You have to build on you successes in your diet and workouts. There will be times where you feel like you have fallen off track. Do not make excuses, pick back up and keep going. By this time, you will know what it takes!

Why do people fail?

 1. Too Much, Too Soon

Committing to a healthier lifestyle and exercise is an exciting time. All to often, I find my clients trying to change too much too soon in their lifestyle. They want to go cold turkey on things they are extremely dependent upon. With no real plan towards sustaining this, they fall back and cave in to cravings. This leads to discouragement and depression. Starting a diet and workout plan will be a steady habitual change. You will begin to make better decisions on food and activity as you progress and learn more about your body.

2. Setting Goals

We talk about this all the time and I am sure this isn't the first time you have heard it. You MUST set goals. These goals can be anything. You should ask yourself a few questions. Why does fitness and being healthier matters to me? How will I reach my end goals? What are a few things I want to see most out of my new active lifestyle? What are my weaknesses? How committed am I? I will I sustain my success and overcome setbacks as they come? You don't have to answer all of these, but they are a few examples of some things you should consider. You should set goals that inspire you. Set big and small goals. The small goal achievements will motivate you to keep going!

3. Plan to Achieve

What's worse than not setting goals? No plan to achieve the goals you set. A wise man once said, "A goal without a plan is a wish". In order to achieve our goals, we have to set out a game plan to actually reaching them. Example: I want to lose twenty pounds in three months. I plan and will commit myself to track calories on a daily basis in order to stay within "X" range and will incorporate cardio exercises into my resistance workout program. You have to be specific about you want so you can plan on how you will make it happen!

Take Action

The time is now to take action towards living a healthier lifestyle. Forget about previous failures and past experiences. Forget what you THINK you know. I always tell my clients to be sponges. Soak up all the knowledge you can but ask questions along the way. There are no cookie cutter plans as we are all different in our own respect. I challenge you over the next year to learn and grow. You will look back and know that this year was the year you finally made a permanent change.

1. Stay Disciplined. Temptations will always be there but it is up to you to stay on track. Remember, each time you overcome these temptations, YOU BECOME STRONGER!

2. Stay Committed. As in everything in life, there will be ups and downs. Stay committed to yourself and you will be surprised how far your passion and discipline will take you. You will also inspire others along the way!

3. Lifestyle/Habitual Change. Making this decision changes everything. Take this into consideration. If you are a fast food person, find an alternative. If you are busy and forget to eat, plan ahead. You will have to make this work your lifestyle and make the necessary adjustments to sustain it. It is absolutely for the best.

You are in this for the long run. I am here to help you along the way. Ask questions and gain more knowledge that will help you make better decisions regarding diet and exercise. This may be a new year but I hesitate to say new you. This is a new MINDSET that will empower you to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Do not liken yourself to other people. The number one thing you should strive to be is better than the person you were yesterday. Let's make this year the best we can. 2017 HERE WE COME!
