I Suck. Don't Be Afraid To Suck.
I want to be candid with you guys and completely honest. Before I go any further here I want to list out a few reasons “Why I Suck”.
It is hard for me to stay on one single task without getting distracted
I normally fall asleep after reading 10 pages of a book
I do not like asking people for help.
I lose SO MANY THINGS. For example.. my wedding band twice, wallet, and I'm currently still looking for my expensive microphone so I can record my next podcast
I forget to do little things (Thank god for my wife :) )
I overcommit and stretch myself thin very often
I probably drink too many energy drinks
I really should spend more time stretching or doing yoga.
I tend to over think things.
I am NOT a good cook. I know how to operate a grill. That is about it.
I am extremely competitive which can be a bad thing at times
I’m the most frugal person. I buy the things I want.
I look like a robot when I try to snowboard. And fall like one too.
I am not good at those “thinking games” on game night. Scategories, Taboo, etc.
I don’t know how to stop working and relax.
I should call my family more
It takes me 5 hours to edit a 3 min video clip
I need to sleep more
It took me 3 hours to edit 1 photo on photoshop for a post
I cannot dance. I am terrible. But I dance anyways to embarrass those around me.
I get extremely anxious before any public speaking
I’m not fluent in any foreign language
I procrastinate on things I do not enjoy.
I can’t wear jeans. It just doesn’t look right.
I still struggle with tying a tie
Listen, it is inevitable. There are going to be many things that we suck at. Honestly, they are probably more plentiful than the things that we are good at. Guess what? That’s okay!
DON’T BE AFRAID TO SUCK!
The only way we can grow is to suck. Point black. Simple. We grow by acknowledging these things. Once we accept it, we can do something about it! No one has ever started out as an expert. Oftentimes, we start from humble beginnings as newbies. It is our passion that pushes us to learn more, do more, develop necessary skills, and eventually master the things we once sucked at.
Don’t be afraid to start something because it’s new. Yes, it will take time. Yes, it will take a ton of energy and focus. Yes, it will be worth it! If we truly care about something, we will push out of our comfort zones and find a way.
Focus on what you CAN do!
We spend so much time evaluating all of the things we cannot do. Listen, it has to be your full time job to focus only on the things you CAN control and CAN do! Everyone is already telling you about how tough things are and how you have the be “realistic”. Stay in your lane. It’s okay to suck today. Focus on growing every day that you suck less and less!
We are limitless! We are in control of our lives. I think it is important to embrace being terrible. Take some time to laugh at yourself and learn. I look back at some of the things I did even a couple of months ago and cringe. I know I will probably look at my work from today in a few months and have the same reaction. That’s just the way it goes and I LOVE IT!
Become a master of taking action!
When you suck, you have to make up in numbers for what you lack in skill. Numbers can be time, resources, conversations, phone calls, etc. Take action and learn as you go. You will make mistakes. It only sharpens you! This is probably the hardest thing to do as a beginner. Taking a leap of faith in fear of looking foolish is difficult. We ABSOLUTELY have to. There is no other way. Sink or swim.
Contrary to what most people say… we live a long life. We are here for a while. We have to stop striving for immediate satisfaction and start playing THE LONG GAME. Instead of thinking about where you’ll be tomorrow, next week, or next year… start considering where you want to be in five years, ten years, and so on. What will your legacy be? What makes you happy? What will be your life’s work?
Stay HUMBLE.
No matter how far you get or where you go, always appreciate where you have come from. It’s impossible to know where the winding road of life will lead us. If we focus on growth in the areas that matter to us and the process of becoming more, we will arrive somewhere that we are truly proud of. Periodically, take time to look back on how far you’ve come. Then, look forward to what’s next. I guarantee you can provide value to others who may not be as far along as you. Reach back and help that next person. I believe that this is the ultimate feeling of fulfillment.
Embrace your suck. It will lead you to becoming the best version of yourself.
I hope you guys have an awesome week and remember… BE THE BETTER YOU!
